To maintain the bond, bricks are often cut to fit
Common shapes have specific names

Image from: Brickwork for Apprentices 5th Edition (2006) by Hodge page 66

Half Bat
This cut is ½ brick

These are often used at corners and the quickest method is to mark the cut with
a header

Length of a brick = 215mm
Minus 10mm for joint = 205mm
205 divided by 2 = approx 100mm

Three-Quarter Bat
This cut is ¾ the length of a brick

However, bricks can vary in size,
so the best method is to cut it
to match the bond and maintain
the perps

The size is approx 160mm

Queen Closer
This is ½ brick, cut lengthways

It is commonly used to maintain the bond for English and Flemish brickwork

The measurement is 56mm

King Closer
This is a mitred brick, but the cut has
an exact position. It is from ½ header
to ½ stretcher

Bricket
This brick has been sliced along its length

It is laid flat and used to bring the brickwork up to gauge

For example, above lintels, where the steel or concrete beam does not work courses

Brick Slip
These are like brick veneers

The thickness is approx ⅛ brick and so the usual size is 25mm, but this can vary

The length is a standard brick
